An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone, left to fuse for a few months, then topped with a crown. It is the only replacement that stops the bone in the gap from shrinking, and unlike a bridge it does not depend on the neighboring teeth.

What it feels like

The placement itself is numb and takes under an hour. The days after feel like a bruise in the jaw, managed with ibuprofen. The waiting is the long part, not the discomfort.

How we treat it

We take a 3D scan first and tell you whether there is enough bone. If there is not, we say so and explain what grafting would involve.

The post goes in under local anesthetic. Three to four months later, once it has fused, we scan again and fit the crown.

You keep a temporary tooth in the gap the whole time. Nobody walks around with a hole.

Common questions

Is it painful?

Less than most people expect. Placing an implant disturbs less tissue than taking a tooth out does.

How long do implants last?

Twenty years and more when the gums stay healthy. They do not decay, but they can lose bone if you stop cleaning around them.

Can I have one straight after the tooth comes out?

Sometimes, if the socket is clean and the bone is good. We decide from the 3D scan, not from hope.

What does it cost?

$3,400 for the implant and crown together. A 3D scan and plan is $150 and comes off the price if you go ahead.
