A cleaning is the cheapest dentistry there is. A hygienist removes the plaque and tartar your brush cannot reach, polishes and flosses, and measures the pocket depth around every tooth so we can compare it next time. The dentist then checks each tooth, your bite and the soft tissue in your mouth, and takes X-rays once a year.

What it feels like

Scraping and a little pressure along the gum line, cold water, and a gritty polish at the end. Sore spots mean inflamed gums, not a rough hygienist. Tell us and we slow down or numb the area.

How we treat it

We clean above and below the gum line, polish, floss and finish with fluoride varnish if you want it.

If your gums bleed or pockets have deepened since last time, we plan a deep cleaning over one or two longer visits instead of pretending a regular clean will fix it.

You leave knowing which two spots your brush keeps missing and what to do about them.

Common questions

Does a cleaning hurt?

For healthy gums, no. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, so say so and we numb the area. Nobody gets a medal for sitting through it.

How often do I really need one?

Twice a year for most people. If you have gum disease, smoke or have had a lot of work done, every three to four months keeps it stable.

Will it whiten my teeth?

It removes surface stains from coffee, tea and wine, so teeth look brighter. It does not change the underlying shade. Whitening does.

What does it cost?

$120 for a checkup and cleaning. A new patient visit with exam, X-rays and cleaning is $89.
